Legal Clerk, 12 month Contract
Mississauga Community Legal Services is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal advice and representation to low-income residents of the City of Mississauga in various areas of law. We provide legal advice and representation to low-income residents of the City of Mississauga in various areas of law including Social Assistance, Tenants Rights, Immigration, Employment, and CPP-D in conjunction with community development and organizing work to address systemic issues of social exclusion, displacement, and poverty.
The Legal Clerk will provide the first point of client contact for intake screening by mean of referrals by conducting initial screening of clients in person and/or by phone/on-line. The role will also perform a variety of client focus administrative duties to support the legal team including compiling legal documents for preparation of hearings, filing court documentations according to legislative procedures, drafting correspondence, affidavits, and statutory declarations.
The ideal candidate is a trained legal administrative professional. They will have at least 2 years of legal administrative experience supporting a team of lawyers and/or paralegals.
To be successful in the role you will have excellent time and file management skills with the ability to work with restrictive deadlines and unpredictable priority changes causing time pressures. We are looking for an individual with strong interpersonal and legal skills including research and analysis, negotiation, public speaking, and advocacy. The ability to speak a second language is an asset.

SOCIAL WORKER Full-time, 12 Month Contract

We focus our work in the areas of housing and homelessness, immigration law, employment law, income security, violence and health, in conjunction with community development and organizing work to address systemic issues of social exclusion, displacement and poverty.
The clinic is seeking a Social Worker to fill a Full-time 12 Month Contract role.
The candidate will be responsible for client intake and brief case management services to address client’s intersecting legal and social issues, community outreach initiatives to increase access to justice in the community of Peel, and other internal and external projects and systemic change initiatives as applicable. The successful candidate will be an important part of a multidisciplinary team, providing brief case management support to clients going through the court/tribunal system. The role will provide brief supportive counselling, advocacy, and information and wrap-around support and deal with the legal process’s impact in their client’s lives in a client-centred, trauma-informed, strengths-based, and anti-oppressive manner.

Qualifications Include:
- Master of Social Work (MSW) preferred, however, a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) coupled with exceptional experience, knowledge and skills will also be considered. Registration in good standing with OCSWSSW.
- 2+ years’ experience in field with anti-oppressive practice while serving clients.
- Experience working for a not-for-profit organization, preferably a Legal Clinic or providing direct client service for Mississauga or Peel residents is preferred.
- Working knowledge of poverty law and associated statutes and regulations, particularly as they relate to income maintenance, immigration and housing;
- Excellent oral and written advocacy skills;
- Commitment to social justice and broader poverty law issues;
- Ability to provide legal services to Franco-Ontarians is an asset;
- Ability to speak a second language is an asset;
The salary range is $75,573 – $90,316 commensurate with level of experience along with a comprehensive health and dental benefits, four weeks of vacation.

Staff Lawyer

The clinic is seeking experienced Lawyers to join our team on a contract and permanent bases.
We are looking for lawyers with several years of experience in one or more areas of law: immigration, housing, employment, or income maintenance. The successful candidate will represent clients before various tribunals and courts, deliver public legal education sessions, and play an active role in community outreach, law reform, and community development initiatives.
